25th June 2006
The day kicked off with a hearty breakfast at John's before meeting both Alan and Stu at the boat yard. May it be pointed out and added to evidence that John V Hornby did hereby turn the boat around Paul's gate in a continuous and orderly fashion. Paul had said that it couldn't be done. The reason I say this is.........John didn't even manage to catch a cold let alone a cray and it was the only way I could get him a mention!!! (Hahem, you forget Irish the female cray in berry which was gently returned to its crevasse.....Oh and the wheel off the wheelbarrow!!! - Ed).
I also learned a valuable lesson. When it's winter buy some thermal clothing for under your suit. It was cold, very cold. A great day for diving, the sun was out, snow capped mountains were our only spectators at that time of the morning, silent sentinels keeping an eye on us we headed north towards Hori Bay after launching at Cable Bay. We hit some great spots but no bugs to be caught. John and Irish were first to hit the icy domain without a complaint.
At this point may it be said that we have a soprano in our midst in the guise of Stu Pope. My God when he hit the water I'd swear the angels heard him and it went something like this. "Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh laluya." Stu you're going to make a great choir boy some day!! ~You're never too old. Alan being from the far south thought the water was fine and we even had to persuade him to wear a wet suit!! No one came up trumps with the crays. Our last dive was a good swim around. We found some good country but again we were disappointed. Stu and Alan managed to take home a keeper each.
Now as I remember it correctly. Alan and Stu began to huddle, just to keep warm. It's what choir boys do when they feel threatened or are cold. Hence we opened the first and last chapter of "Broke Back Divers". First there were cowboys. We didn't think it was going to stick but it did. But consider this. Grown men and women parading around in neoprene suits and masks, I believe there are clubs for this kind of carry on. If you find anyone who's interested lets try and sign them up. Some people call it a fetish but those in the loop like to call it scuba diving.
Finally we completed the day with a Good Samaritan deed by towing 3 young fellas and their truck and inflatable boats up off the beach.
It was a great day yet again for the Nelson Bays Dive Club. Roll on the Lermontov trip.
