Okiwi Bay

13th August 2005

With a small crew of Mark, Paul, Angus and I we made the dash for Okiwi Bay. Spirits were high and with the weather holding we headed out. We were in ahead of all the other boats so we throttled ahead hoping for a successful hunt.

On our arrival to the scallop bed we were bombarded by a pod of dusky dolphins. What an awesome sight to behold. It brought on a fevered urge to get in the water and so with Mark and Angus taking the early morning plunge they came up trumps and filled Paul and I in where and where not to go. The scallops were settled in the 20m mark and it made for a fine dive for both Paul and I. The viz was verging on the poor side and we had to keep ahead of an ominous silt cloud which threatened to engulf us if we dawdled on the one spot.

In the interest of the conditions we had a scallop buoy tied through both catch bags. This made for a good laugh when unlike-minded divers felt that their way was the best way and there was a lot of pulling and dragging in opposite directions until we settled into a successful rhythm and came up with our quota.

Again the dolphins were curious to see what we would do next and with the feeling of them pulling our aqua chariot we charged onto our next spot. Mark and Angus were rearing to go and with out so much as a “by your leave” they gripped their slings, disappeared into the briny and came up trumps. Between them they brought up some nice sized blue cod and a couple of moki. They really hit the jackpot because when Paul and I hit the watery realm we were found wanting. Paul got himself a nice size blue cod and I on the other hand couldn’t even hit the ocean floor and since it was my first time with a sling I was lucky enough not to impale myself during my overly enthusiastic foraging.

Well that’s a wrap for the month of August and until our September swaray have a good one and safe diving. Cheers to the three boys, had a great day and look forward to the next adventure. Thanks for the use of the boat Angus we appreciate it.
