Fishing Comp - Oct 02

OCTOBER 19th 2002
Nelson North Country Club Hunting & Fishing Competition

We met at our designated point just before 6am for a quick chat then headed off to Picton, followed by a bite to eat at the local bakery while waiting for Angus and co who had got into a spot of bother with their tyres on the way over. We were wondering how we had got to Picton first as John was towing the boat. They finally showed up and we headed off to Waikawa Bay.

We loaded up Angus’ boat and then set off in search of the local delicacy - crayfish. As we neared Tory Channel we were pleased to see that John and Angus’ weather map reading skills were on target as it was flat calm and the forecast was for Gale Force winds at both ends of the day. We turned left at the entrance of the channel and headed up the coast along Cape Koamaru in search of some rough ground.

Stu, John, Bob and myself jumped overboard and managed to get a couple of crays each in viz of about 5 - 7 metres. Next up Angus and Mon. We passed the time watching Bob pulling up cod after cod and Stu with a nice Tarakihi, then it was time to help the others onto the boat. We carried on up the coast and settled on some uneven ground that looked worth a go. The same 4 headed back over the side to try their luck. A good dive had with John sporting a good sized buck, which was unfortunately soft and had to be released

Mon and Angus headed off for their last swim. As they descended Bob grabbed the fishing rod once more to try and bring in the competition winner. Angus and Mon surfaced after about ½ hour with goodies in their catch bags. Once on board we discovered that Mon had a beauty and had shown up the boys, but John and Stu argued that their buddy pair had caught the most.

After a great day in suprisingly good weather we headed home earlier than usual so not to miss the 6pm weigh in at the Nelson North Country Club.

All in all, another successful club trip with three prizes for Heaviest Cray, and Best Dressed Lady Angler going to Mon and Biggest Tarakihi going to Angus.

Nice One - Sam Shattock.
